People who don’t wear shirts might be nudists, He-Man, and Mark Zuckerberg. When and how to tuck in a shirt are still things that most guys don’t fully understand, even though shirts are an important part of most guys’ workdays and dates.

These are problems that even famous people in fashion, like David Beckham, have had. It got so hard for the A-lister to figure out how to tuck in his shirt once in the 2000s that he thought he should wear his shirt half in and half out, which should be safer. Looks good on both occasions. What happened? Did it get stuck? But some people outside of Fashion Week still wear this look.

Let’s look at the three proven ways every man should know how to tuck in his shirt.

WHEN TO TUCK A SHIRT IN

It’s essential to decide if the item of clothing you want to tuck in even needs to be tucked in before we get into the different ways to do it (because there is more to it than just shoving them into your pants randomly). There’s an easy way to figure this out, though.

Depending on the shape of the shirt’s hem, you may not need to open your fly or can just throw it on without any trouble.

STRONG HEM

It’s okay to wear your shirt without a collar if the hem is the same length all the way around. For sure, that’s how it was meant to be worn. Could you pick it up and leave? Don’t forget to put on your other clothes, or you might get in trouble with the law.

At this point, you can pretty much just put it on. What button could you pick up and leave?

HEM WITH A CURVE

A shirt with a curved hem and a long front and tail is generally meant to be worn tucked in. There’s a reason for that shape: the extra fabric lets you move around more while still staying tucked in. However, there are many grey areas between these standards and the actual rules stated above.

Dean Gomilsek-Cole, the head of design at Turnbull & Asser, a master shirtmaker on Jermyn Street., says that if the shirt has a curve, it’s usually not a good idea to wear it out of the pocket. Also, the clothes tell you if they should be dressed down or up. For example, you should never wear a dress shirt with a pique front bib and other features out of the collar. Yes, unless you want to look like your uncle at the wedding when he’s drunk.

As our second tailor on Jermyn Street, Emma Willis, says, “A shirt needs to have the right shaped hem and length tails to look worn out.” “Shorter lengths and a softly curved “speed” or “American” hem, or square tail, look best.”

When it comes to Oxford shirts, the hem often has a slight curve in it. You can wear them tucked in or out, depending on your desired style. In the same way, flannel shirts usually have a bent hem that you should never tuck in unless you’re doing some DIY projects on the weekend.

LENGTH OF SHORTS

You can tell if a shirt should be tucked in by length and the hem’s curves.

Either your shirt shrunk in the wash, or it wasn’t meant to be tucked in if the back of it always comes undone when you sit down. If your dress shirt stops below your hip, you should always tuck it in. If someone stops you in the street and asks where you got your dress, the same thing will happen.

SHIRT TUCKS VARIOUS KINDS

We promise you can tuck in your shirt in more than one way. Which of the following techniques will work best for you will depend on the type of shirt you have, what you plan to wear it with, and the style you want to achieve.

1. THE UGLY TUCK

THE UGLY TUCK

This is the easiest way to tuck your shirt in, and you’ve probably been doing it this way since you were about five years old. It’s still useful sometimes, though. The open tuck is good for speed and ease. Ensure the extra fabric at the bottom of your shirt is even with your pants‘ belt and tuck it in. After that, put your best belt around your waist and button and zip your pants.

  •  Pick out a shirt or polo that isn’t too tight and has been cleaned.
  • Start in the back and work to the front of your pants as you tuck your shirt into your belt. Ensure that all the bottoms of your shirts fit into your pants. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
  • Lastly, to make the outfit look less tight, shrug your shoulders or slowly raise your arms.

2. THE MILITARY EXTRA

THE MILITARY EXTRA

The military tuck is a way to tuck your shirt that you’ll never go back to. Personally, I think Everything is worse than a shirt that starts to bunch up in the front, making you look bad. With this method, that problem is fully solved.

  • You are going to tuck your shirt into your waistband like you always do, but instead of just buttoning your shirt, run your hands around the front to the sides of your belt to smooth out any wrinkles or bunches.
  • Then, pinch each side of the fabric and fold it back on itself to make it look like it fits. Check that the button on your shirt and the zipper on your pants are lined up. Finally, stand back and look at your work.

3. THE TUCK AND BOTTOM

THE TUCK AND BOTTOM

When you wear a half-tuck, only the front of your shirt is tucked into your pants. You should leave the back of your shirt open. There are rumours that Ralph Lauren “approves” of this style, but most of us should avoid it unless we want to look like college rugby players when we go out with our friends.

  • Do not tuck the front of your shirt into your belt.
  • Shrug your shoulders if you want to loosen up your look without taking out the front of your shirt.
  • Ensure there are no wrinkles and the shirt doesn’t bunch up on the sides or back. Instead, let it hang loosely.

4. WEARING UNDERWEAR TUCK

The name makes it sound like you put your shirt inside your underwear, but that’s not what the underwear tuck is. The right way to do it is with stacked tucks, which look good when you wear an undershirt.

  • Simply take off your shirt and tuck the extra fabric at the bottom of your undershirt into your underwear or shorts. Before you put on your pants and shirt, take a moment to look at yourself in the mirror. Just like always, fold your shirt in half.
  • At the very end, you could choose a military tuck if you really want to step it up a notch.

5. THE BODY TUCK

THE BODY TUCK

If you wear a good jacket that fits well, it can hide many things, including a shirt that is too big for you.

She says, “You can cheat a little if your shirt is pretty full and you wear a jacket.”Pull the fullness back so the front is smooth, and wear your jacket over the back to hide the extra fabric.” To tuck in, pull down well.

If you choose this way, you should keep your jacket on, of course.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR TOP IN

You should make sure your shirt stays in place all day or all night now that you know the different ways to tuck garments. Lucky for us, there are a lot of clever ways to do that.

1. THE SHIRT COMES WITH YOU

A set of shirt stays costs £18 at Sharp & Dapper. When the dress code says “smart,” these stay: keep your shirt in place under your suit or tuxedo. They also work well as birth control if you meet someone at that event.

If there’s even a small chance that these awful things will fall off in front of someone other than yourself, you should put them in the back of your closet.

But if you’re sure the mouse will stay in his house, you can use them to keep the tops of your socks on the bottom of your shirt. Do not forget that you should never do this with pants on.

2. RUBBER GRIP LABEL

RUBBER GRIP LABEL

According to tailors, using rubber grip tape is a great way to make your life a lot easier if the dress shirt doesn’t sound very appealing.

These shirt stays are available at Sharp & handsome for £18, and they can be used for two things: first, Once the dress code says “smart,” don’t move your shirt under your suit or tux. And second, they can help you avoid getting pregnant if you meet someone at that event.

Put these awful things in the back of your closet if there is even a small chance that they will fall off in front of someone other than yourself.

Although, if you are sure the mouse will stay in the residence, they can keep your socks from riding up. Remember that you should never do this with your pants on.

3. THE ANSWER BUTTON

There’s more to those little buttons on the inside of some pants than meets the eye.

Put your shirt in and button the inside of each side of your pants to keep it in place. Just wrap the shirt material around the button and hook it behind it.

HOW TO Tuck In Your Shirt: Any dress shirt should always be tucked in.

Don’t: Tuck in shirts with straight hems and collars.

DO: Notice how bent the bottom of a shirt is to see if it needs to be tucked in.

DO NOT: Try the “one tail in, one tail out” style that David Beckham uses.

DO: To get a smooth, wrinkle-free shirt front, use a military tuck.

Don’t: If you’re not sure you won’t take your pants off in public, wear a shirt.
